~~ Pro Hart Prize for Hanging Art
Judge – Lisa Loader Winner: Genevieve Carroll “Tugging the World to Fruit” “This was a very strong exhibition of works and a difficult exercise to choose the winner. However, Genevieve Carroll’s work did stand out. It shows a teacup caught up in a maelstrom of colour. A joyous, exuberant and powerful work – lime greens pop alongside splashes of peach, olive, orange and pale blue. The brushwork is assured and the composition well resolved.” Highly Commended: Gwendolin Lewis “Early Morning at the Stockyard” “A beautifully layered drawing that captures the soft pink and orange early morning light very effectively, with the blue-blacks of the shadowed clusters of trees creating a powerful contrast.” Rachel Melchers “Fragile Containers with Beach Collection” "A well observed work of skill and sensitivity.” Julie Simmons “Storm Over Castlereagh” “This work depicts the drama of the stormy scene in a very restrained and skilful manner. A very moving piece.” ~~ Print Storm Prize for Photography Judge – Bob Hughes Winner: Alf Manciagli “The Thespian” “Technical excellence meets human impact. The look of bemusement – or could it possibly be resignation? – has an ambiguity that holds us beyond our first glance. The rich black and white and great detail make for a technically very good print that pops with meaning”. Highly Commended: Rosalie Dale “Faded Beauty” “An elegant image of delicate decay and other worldliness. There’s a beautiful colour balance that encourages you to look and look again, and a sense of the mournful”. Philip Johnson “The Journey” “A picture that you could step into and feel the damp bark under your feet and the cool mist on your face. Great detail and colours, and a composition that leads you smoothly into the image”. John McNabb “Connected” “The story of a new beginning and trans-generational heritage is carried beautifully by the light around the child’s head as she looks into the darkness, and a wonderfully-captured look in her eyes and the connection of the intertwined fingers”. ~~ Art Unlimited Ceramics Prize Judge – Nerrida Barber Winner: Anne Mossman “My Landscapes” “Exquisite work”. Highly Commended: Kookie Atkins “Infinity Bowl” “It probably took her an infinity to complete this piece and it is well done”. Anna Kaineder “After the Fire” “I admired the courage of these three proud sentinels”. Pippa Kensit “The Land Unpeeled” “Such an honest, raw personification of our land (above and below the ground). The best example I have seen of this technique”. ~~ Fairview ArtSpace Prize Judge – Helen Harwood Winner: Pippa Kensit “The Land Unpeeled” “The three ceramic pieces in this work are a textural representation of the peeling back of the land to its raw components. It has a balanced form that invites us in”. ~~ Orana Arts Indigenous Artist Prize Judge – Alicia Leggett Winner: Jordan Shillingsworth “My Perspective” “We are always keen to support works presented in new media by contemporary Aboriginal artists. It’s an exciting concept that should be further developed and we encourage the artist to use this work as a foundation for stronger works in the future”. ~~ ABC Western Plains Prize Judge – Alicia Leggett Winner: Geoff Thomas “Jar” “There is a connection to the land through texture and colour. As you study the pot you see what appears to be the flow of water over and across the land into natural waterholes, almost like an aerial photograph. It is a beautifully rendered piece of art”. ~~ People's Choice Winner: Alexandra Wright, "Hugh in Hue" The people said it all really ! |
